The Old Battle-ax

(1943)
A novel by

Elisabeth Sanxay Holding was an American novelist and short story writer who primarily wrote detective novels in the hardboiled school of detective fiction. Raymond Chandler called her "the top suspense writer of them all."
Skilfully told by Holding to a startling finale, "The Old Battle Axe" is a suspenseful story of murder in which normal persons are thrown into abnormal situations. Mme Pascal de Belleforte, formerly Madge Pendleton of the Long Islands Pendletons arrives from Paris in a state of disrepair, swallows two double Martinis at a waterfront dive and then is bumped off at the home of her sister, Mrs. Herriott, who denies her identity. Indeed, is the corpse Madge's?
