Curtmantle

(1996)
A novel by

Henry, Duke of Normandy and Count of Anjou, shortly to become Henry II of England, married at eighteen the divorced wife of Louis VII of France. She was the beautiful and already notorious Eleanor of Aquitaine, by then aged twenty-nine. Henry was an able ruler; restless, cunning, ruthless, said to be descended from the devil; but he had great charm. This story is told by three of the women, who, in their different ways, both loved and hated Henry. They are Margaret, princess of Scotland; her daughter Constance, who married one of Henry's sons; and the woman who signed herself at last 'Eleanor, by the wrath of God Queen of England'.
