Dead Man's Pain

A man being pursued collides with Nicholas Penn. Assuming his pocket has been pilfered in the scuffle, Nicholas also gives chase. But the stranger fails to see a horse careering down the road, and is trampled by the animal, seemingly mortally. Later, though, Nicholas discovers that the man was no thief - and still lives. Mystified, he is determined to discover the truth behind the 'dead' man's pain...
