We all make mistakes. None of us enjoy them, and if we knew what they were, we'd avoid them. This book sets out the most common mistakes writers make and how-to avoid them based on practical experience gathered over nearly three decades.
From the Introduction:
I've been writing for nearly three decades. When anyone does something for that long, and they aren't unconscious, they begin to recognize patterns.
Patterns in the work. In the publishing industry. Within specific publishers. And patterns in authors.
I wrote a series of articles on these patterns and, at the request of readers, compiled them into one book and made them available for eReaders. Mistakes Writers Make and How-To Avoid Them is that book.
While there's value to all people in avoiding these mistakes, for obvious reasons, I'm focusing on authors. The concepts are universal and the means to avoid them are, too. So regardless of your vocation, or your position within the industry, the mistakes and ways to avoid them translate.
I sincerely hope that by bringing these mistakes and constructive ways to avoid them to your attention will in some small way benefit you. These are mistakes I've seen happen over and again, and there's no reason we all have to make them. We can learn from those who came before us, and use their results and accompanying insights to make it through our own lives and careers with fewer wounds.
Understand that we all make mistakes - and we'll continue to make mistakes because we're human. I often say, I'm flawed to the core. That doesn't mean I enjoy scraping my knees, my nose, or ending up flat on my face with tire-track stripes across my back. I'm guessing you don't much enjoy that either.
My goal in this work is to offer these common mistakes and ways to avoid them to help you skip the scrapes and tire tracks. Together, by sharing, we can break the pattern!
