It's not every night budding lawyer and amateur guitarist Ronan Younger awakens to find a purple-haired pixie, with an antique hat pin piercing one ear, raiding his refrigerator, but it's a night--and a girl--said lawyer will never forget. Getting caught stealing food is the last thing Tessa Rae Empire needs, especially on a frigid December night, but she has three hungry little runaways depending on her to feed them, and busking on sidewalks for coins just isn't getting it done, no matter how often she goes out in the cold to sing. She'd dearly love to stay and chat with her "pajama Elvis," but the children depend on her and abandoning them is one thing she will never do. When Ronan comes on her again, however, singing for her supper, she fears the end has come for her and the children, but Ronan has means at his disposal she never dreamed existed, starting with his wealthy, influential stepfather, Drew Camstock.
Somehow, Drew sets everything to rights for the children, despite their tragic backgrounds and fearful circumstances, and Ronan is determined to do the same for the girl with the purple hair and the voice to make angels weep. Tessa has unwittingly committed a number of possible felonies in her attempts to save and protect the children, however, and Ronan is adamant that the talking board and medium she's been using to consult the spirits advising her are strictly forbidden for a Christian household. With the children safe, it seems to Tessa that she, too, has become forbidden, and the only way she can protect the man and family she's come to love is to remove herself from their lives.
Can Ronan prevent her from pleading guilty to charges of which she is truly innocent and ruining both their lives? Or will Tessa let someone protect her for a change? Only God knows.
