Created from the folklore about German prankster Tyll Ulenspiegel, and partially inspired by Strauss's tone poem, this lively play is offered to the reader as is and to any interested production group as they choose to modify it. As is, it unfolds a coherent tale of its anti-hero's pranks, including pretending to teach an ass to read, talking a town out of hanging him, gaining an audience with the anti-Pope in Avignon, and even falling fruitlessly in love. Tyl's Owl and a mult-purpose equine called Egmont accompany him throughout as narrator and sidekick.
