Caddie Mayfair is growing up in the 1950s. Slipping away semi-secretly one Saturday afternoon to enjoy a soda and forbidden comic books at a downtown drugstore, she discovers a back way into the strange Mathom Shop. Where she gets sucked into an antique hand mirror, in which she meets Till Ulenspiegel, who partially explains the enchantment. The Mirror catches its victims in a reflection of reflections of their own immediate worlds, and each victim must go through his or her own Nightmare to reach the places were earlier victims were trapped. By the time Till and Caddie reach the back of The Mirror and its promised escape, their party has grown to five, including a lady from one of W. S. Gilbert's blank-verse plays, another from Chrétien de Troyes' last romance, and Sir Brian de Bois-Guilbert from Scott's Ivanhoe, all associated in some way with The Mirror. Also a dog and a kitten.
This volume also includes "The Lost Gospel of Tages," an Etruscan work which plays a part in Caddie's story.
