When Finlay Bruce is called in to investigate a missing local, his first instinct is to check the local hostelries. Finding strangers lurking in the shadows behind coaching yards is warning enough that something’s wrong, but to find a supposed member of the aristocracy spying on people is another matter entirely. Finlay knows that this has nothing to do with his investigation, but there’s something about Viscount Darling that’s just plain odd. He isn’t sure what it is, the odd walk perhaps, or maybe the strangely slurred speech that’s nothing more than a sinister whisper, or it might possibly be that he prefers the darkness outside taverns than the revelry within.

The question of what Viscount Darling is doing, and who he really is means that Finlay can’t walk away, just in case he has something to do with the disappearance he’s supposed to be investigating. What he isn’t aware of is the trouble he ends up in when he lingers to watch Viscount Darling instead of leaving like he should have done, and he isn’t prepared for the lengths he has to go to in order to escape his predicament with his life intact.

Una Russell is not going to sit at home and wait for news. Her cousin’s missing, and because nobody in the family thinks that anything has happened to him, she knows it is down to her to prove that he’s in trouble. Getting to his house is perfectly fine. However, investigating his last known whereabouts proves considerably harder not least because Una quickly realises that she’s being followed by more than one person, and they want her to ‘disappear’ next.
