The seaside village of Saint Martin on the Norfolk coast is, upon first glance, a seemingly ordinary if a little quaint country village - until nightfall. With more shadow shifting than there ought to be in the dead of night, Rufus knows that something is seriously wrong - but what? Everyone is friendly enough - sort of. However, nothing is as it seems.

Rufus knows that he should just close his aunt's house down and return to London. What's going on in Saint Martin is really none of his business. However, an odd letter from his aunt, his delightful neighbour, and the rather pesky local Customs Officer, Kemble-Myers, conspire to draw him into a world of lies, deceit, and subterfuge, that makes Rufus start to question his own sanity.

Despite his curiosity getting the better of him, Rufus isn't prepared for the truth when it appears not least because it could put not just him but most of the residents in Saint Martin in gaol. While he learns just how secretive the locals can be, he also discovers what he's prepared to sacrifice for a chance to call Saint Martin his home, and be able to spend a lifetime with Henrietta.
