Sufficient Unto the Day
(2021)(Book 13 in the Matthew Cordwainer Medieval Mystery series)
A novel by Joyce Lionarons
September, 1274: A weaver's family is found murdered in their beds. As Matthew Cordwainer, King's Coroner, investigates the killings, he is called to yet another murder, this time a beggar by Bootham Bar. Soon it becomes clear that someone is trying to rid York of its poor by murder. All clues point to a single suspect: Sir Rupert de Bury, Sheriff of York.
Cordwainer must work to find enough evidence either to clear or convict de Bury, assisted by his manservant Jarvis and an injured Hugh Porrock, who appears at Cordwainer's door refusing to return to his foster family. Before he can do so, the killer goes on the attack again, and this time his prey is Cordwainer himself.
