Snare In The Dark
(1981)(The third book in the Dan Mallett series)
A novel by Frank Parrish (Roger Longrigg)
Poacher, lover, con man - Dan Mallett was generally liked but nowhere trusted in the remote West Country village where he lived. The gamekeeper Edgar Bland was generally trusted but nowhere liked. The two men were old enemies so when Bland was killed with a crossbow, Dan was the obvious suspect. On the night of the murder, confident that Bland was miles away visiting a friend in a nursing home, Dan had been in the woods setting snares for pheasants. Almost as soon as he sensed that he was not alone, he was caught in the glare of a flashlight and heard Bland crowing with triumph. A moment later, the gamekeeper fell, an arrow in his neck, and there was a sound of running feet. But nobody would believe a third man had been present. Dan had the opportunity and the motive - resisting arrest. Who had set the murder trap and why had Bland cancelled his arrangements to visit the nursing home? Dan wanted the answers very badly indeed. The last thing he could do was to go to the police with his questions, so he would have to get the information himself. He would start with the nursing home, if he could find out which one it was. Along the way, being Dan, he found an ally in a girl, the bewitching Juanita. Unfortunately, others were less friendly - the police who were pursuing him and the unknown enemies who would stop at nothing to protect their sinister secret. 'Snare in the Dark' is the third in a series of suspense novels about the delightful and unusual Dan Mallett. Book Dust Jacket
