The night Dan Blake chose to come to Winner, it was cloudy and dark as befitted a man bound on a mission that was meant to be seen only by the eyes of the wind, heard by the whispering buffalo grass. He had not yet seen the town, yet he knew it as well as if he lived there. Already, in the black night, he could visualise the main street, the false fronts, the homes - the town rising out of the Nebraska plains and the prairie sod, a part of it built from that same sod. It was three in the morning when he knocked on Ben Evans' door; as arranged, Evans was expecting him, to discuss Dan's plans to recapture the Lazy R... So begins the story of a man driven by hate and full of lust for revenge.
