Danny Holdsworth was devastated when his best friend Nigel Slater was murdered thirty years ago when they were both about to head off to university. Even though the police tried to implicate Danny himself at the time they had no evidence and since then they've found no other suspect. Now an esteemed television journalist Danny decides to take a year off and go back to his hometown of Matlock in the Derbyshire peak district and take over as editor of the local evening newspaper which he intends to use to campaign to finally bring Nigel's killer to justice. But along the way he hadn't counted on some passionate yet arguably forbidden events in his love life and he certainly hadn't expected the arrival of his estranged mother who's been living in America since Danny was a child. He hasn't seen her since then but she brings news of Nigel's killer that will truly make Danny wish he'd never been born.
