Huey Down

(2020)
(Book 11 in the Heroes of Vietnam series)
A Story by

The enemy is on the move inside the area known as the Iron Triangle. Most are moving underground, burrowing like moles, building hundreds of kilometers of tunnels close to the town of Cu Chi. They are well armed, including multiple machine guns, deployed for air defense, or and most dangerous of all, RPG-7 rockets. To a low-flying helicopter, these rockets are death.

Company B, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment Airmobile, is sent to patrol a suspect area, locate the enemy positions and call in an airstrike. Except the Vietcong strikes first. A Huey loaded with American troopers is brought down in the middle of enemy territory by a rocket, and the race to rescue them and get them out begins.

Third Platoon led by Lieutenant Richard Early, the former movie star, leads the rescue attempt, and Early leads them into an overwhelming enemy force almost as soon as the skids of their Huey touch the ground. He shouts for his men to retreat, but Private Joe Walker and  his buddy Bo Buck ignore the order and push through the thick jungle until they are close to the downed helicopter. But they are also close to overwhelming numbers of enemy fighters, and when the Communists switch their attention to the would-be rescuers, their chances of getting through the mission alive are zero. And some would say even less.

Heroes of Vietnam Book 11 – Huey Down is the eleventh shortread fiction set during the Vietnam War. The book is a collaboration between Todd McLeod and Eric Meyer, the bestselling author of more than fifty war novels.
