Third Platoon, Company B, 5th Battalion, Airmobile, is stood down after a tough operation. Until the  platoon commander, Lieutenant Robert Early, a former movie star whose career had faded into oblivion, volunteers  them for a rescue mission.

A CIA agent had been captured by the Vietcong and held in a jungle hideout. The enemy will want to extract everything he knows about American operations inside south Vietnam. CIA  is determined to get him back. They send in another agent, this time a desk-warrior, bob Greet, determined to earn his spurs in the field. Greer and Early hit it off from the start, two men with the appearance of veteran fighters, and less experience and backbone than a grocery store clerk.

They reach the suspect area, and find it a heavily fortified Vietcong village. The mission is time critical, and they cannot delay going in to  locate the prisoner and get him out. Except Early hesitates and Greer is happy to hold back. Two men are not happy to wait, Joe Walker, the battalion wizard with a grenade, and Bo Buck, a hunter who can shoot the eye out of a squirrel at one hundred yards.

Every ounce of their skills is required to beat back the overwhelming odds they run up against, and it is touch and go whether they can survive long enough for reinforcements to arrive. Reinforcements that do not look they are about to arrive any time soon.
