Some said the Battle of Saipan in the Marianas was the bloodiest of the Pacific theatre. Little more than twelve miles long and five miles wide, the Japanese regarded the island as of critical importance to the wall. So did the United States Marines. So important they must blind the Japanese to their approach by destroying an observation post perched high on a mountain top.

Second Platoon, Company C chooses the men to undertake the suicidal task. Second Lieutenant Robert Morgan is ordered to lead the squad. An officer with powerful connections in Washington and a reputation as a bungling coward. Another member of the squad, Earl Hickam, has recently recovered from a serious wound and has lost all faith in his ability to fight. It is a bad start for a vital mission. Private Jesse Ferrell has serious misgivings, but along with his buddy Dan O’Brien and Sergeant Josh Weaver, all they can do is obey orders like they always do. And fight like demons, like they always do.

A submarine carries them as far as two miles offshore, and they paddle to the beach in a rubber dinghy. They have arrived on Saipan, and their task is thread their way through thousands of Japanese defenders, climb a steep mountain and attack an impregnable position. And in the unlikely event any of them survive, to make it back.

Raiders is the eleventh shortread novel in the ‘Heroes of the Pacific’ series of fictional war stories set during World War II in the Pacific. The book is a collaboration between Todd McLeod and Eric Meyer, the bestselling author of more than fifty war novels.
