A Magnum for Schneider
(1969)(Red File For Callan / Callan)
(The first book in the Callan series)A novel by James Mitchell
To get a fuller picture of the status of James Mitchell around the time of Callan then watch The Prisoner. When Dangerman ended ITV gave Patrick McGokhan the green light for another spy series and McGoohan went to Mitchell for an idea. The essence of The Prisoner is that a British agent wants to retire but this causes consternation by his bosses and he is removed to a Village.
This was Mitchell's idea and his view of the series would be along a standard format. McGoohan had different ideas and their arguments can be illustrated in one of the opening scenes of The Prisoner. McGoohan goes to his boss and demonstrates with him. The boss is played by James Mitchell!
McGoohan was the star and got his way though the original idea for The Prisoner was Mitchell's.
