To Katie, the drying stream was a symbol of the love she had lost. After three years of self imposed exile she came home to her brother's house, to the village where happy memories were tainted by the remembrance of rejection and a new remorse. Normal family occasions were a welcome antidote to the uneasy interludes at the ugly old house below the quarry, but there were to be unpleasant scenes and moments of terror before the drought broke and Katie found that happiness, like the stream, could flow again.
