The old willow tree by the river saw everything: clandestine lovers, Susan's meeting with her 'shining knight' and later Susan weeping. It was in sight of the tree, too, that the final tragedy occurred, when jealousy and revenge struck suddenly and a life waspointlessly wasted. Looking back, Susan could see how it all happened, though for the most part she was a helpless onlooker.
