As local residents and visiting vendors prepare for the annual Rockin' Ribs BBQ & Blues Festival in Crescent Creek, Colorado, the quiet morning is shattered by bursts of gunfire. At first, everyone fears the worst. But there is only one fatality: a man found inside an Airstream trailer at the edge of the Community Center parking lot.
A short time later, while police interview witnesses, they discover that another crime took place immediately before the gunshots. A box of merchandise was stolen from one of the exhibitors. It contained a mishmash of memorabilia, antiques and collectibles, from rare and irreplaceable treasures to inexpensive knickknacks and commonplace trinkets.
The theft is quickly linked to the murder, and the Crescent Creek Police ask former private investigator Kate Reed to consult on the investigation. After spending mornings and afternoons at her family's bakery cafe, Kate works to crack the case. The effort leads to a variety of clues and evidence, including a frizzy blonde wig, bright orange flip-flops, a pair of late-night burglaries, a can of Pringles and three stolen security guard uniforms.
