Early one morning in Crescent Creek, Colorado, gunshots are heard at the home of Kelly and Gil Dutton. Although a note found later at the scene suggests that the incident only involved the couple, local police quickly debunk that idea. But who pulled the trigger? Why was the pair targeted? And how quickly can the coldblooded crime be solved?

To supplement the official investigation, the Crescent Creek Police Department asks former private investigator Kate Reed to consult on the case. Kate devotes mornings and afternoons to her family's popular bakery cafe. But once Sky High Pies closes for the day, she digs into the Dutton inquiry. Along the way, she uses an assortment of clues to help solve the crime. These include a multicolored snake tattoo, bright blue coveralls and balaclavas, Gil Dutton's wallet, a red Tesla Model S, cotton balls soaked in eucalyptus oil, a stack of stolen mail and two blue china cups.
