It is 1100AD. In London, Papal Envoy and consummate diplomat Piers De Chatillon is deeply embroiled in a plot of his devising to kill William Rufus, the King of England. As the most feared, lethal assassin in Europe, this endeavour should be second nature to him, but with such a high-profile target, his friends see this as a dangerous and suicidal mission from which he may not return.
However, Piers has no choice; the price may be high, but the reward is immense. It will mean his wife Isabella's return to her home, and his family's lives and safety assured for the future. So, he prepares to take the risk and puts his plan into play, but will it be discovered? Far too many loose ends and unpredictable players are involved, while the King's arch manipulator, Ranulf Flambard, is highly suspicious of them and watches their every move. Could Piers De Chatillon and his young friend Conn Fitz Malvais end up in an English cell waiting for the executioner's axe?

Preoccupied with his plan, Chatillon is unaware that his nemesis, the murdering Sheikh Ishmael, has somehow survived the flaming galley in Cabrera. Burnt and damaged almost beyond recognition, Ishmael is found and kept alive by a community of Benedictine monks. These healers do not realise the evil hiding in their midst as he keeps his identity secret, but they will soon learn and pay the price.
Ishmael's one desire is to find his daughter, Coralie, intent on snatching her from Isabella; he intends to extract as much revenge on his enemies as possible while he does. He discovers Coralie and Isabella are in Genoa and places himself outside the city; he is patient, just watching and waiting for an opportunity.

Piers De Chatillon, unaware that Ishmael is alive and is a dangerous threat again, is hundreds of leagues away in London, ready to kill a King.

How can Chatillon possibly reach or stop Ishmael from destroying his family this time?
