It is 1098, and Piers De Chatillon's friend, Duke Robert, has foolishly handed Normandy to his manipulative brother King William Rufus for a loan to lead the Crusade to take Jerusalem back from the Caliphate. Duke Robert cannot repay the huge fortune he borrowed from King William to equip his Crusaders, so he will probably lose Normandy. Against this backdrop, Piers De Chatillon frantically searches from one end of Europe to the other for his stolen wife, Isabella, to no avail.
Chatillon, a Papal Envoy, lethal assassin and master swordsman, has reached a low ebb. His blood feud with Sheikh Ishmael has caused the death of two of his family. His wife was kidnapped and is now in the hands of her captors. He has searched for her for over a year, and now he torments and blames himself for her loss. Unexpected help arrives in the form of friends sent by his concerned uncle, Pope Urban. They are fearsome warriors determined to help him find Isabella, for they owe Chatillon a great debt.
Nothing has prepared Piers De Chatillon for what he is enduring now, but his warrior friends decide that he should now take the war to the Sheikh. This is a bold, dangerous move as Sheikh Ishmael is powerful, a brutal pirate with dozens of ships, hundreds of men, weapons and resources. Chatillon is initially unsure; he risks more by following their plan and possibly leaving his young sons with neither parent. However, as he tells his friends the story of the attack and his children's death, his rage and anger build and reignites the desire for vengeance. He decides the Sheikh will feel his wrath as he sets out to destroy his enemy by unleashing the Breton Horse Warriors on him and his empire.
