The War in the Pacific rages, and the United States Marines prepare to storm ashore on the Island of Saipan, prepared to face yet another bloody battle.

First, a mighty two-day bombardment from battleships lying offshore pound the defences. When the Marines head toward the beach in their landing craft, or LCVPs, they expect to face little resistance. They are wrong. Two men from Second Platoon, Company C, Ferrell and O’Brien, are taken ashore before the landings to penetrate the interior. Their mission, to locate the headquarters of the garrison commander, General Saito. The intention is to destroy his command and control center, but things unravel when they run into unexpected strong Japanese resistance. They have no choice but to fall back, which means their mission is a bust. Although they capture a prisoner who proves to have vital information. He describes a deadly surprise waiting for the Marines when they storm across the island. Three hidden, remotely detonated minefields, buried beneath the ground they must cross to take the island. Minefields with the potential to destroy entire companies of troops and regiments of tanks. Minefields that could wipe out much of the invading force in a sea of high explosive and a lake of blood.

The Marines land on the beach and move further inshore. Second Platoon is detailed to locate the remote detonators and destroy them. The captured Jap soldier leads Ferrell and O’Brien toward a mountaintop observation post containing the detonators, but all they can do is stare at the heavily guarded and impregnable slope, knowing their mission has hit the buffers. Knowing many men must die.

Leaving their own soldiers and armor to fall into the trap is not an option. Ferrell and O’Brien search for a way to reach the observation post, and they discover there may be a chance to reach it. With no alternative they launch an attack against overwhelming odds. Knowing failure will result not just in their deaths, but the deaths of hundreds of their fellow Marines.
