A brand new historical Western adventure from Charles Ray!
In the summer of 1864, with General Grants Union forces putting pressure on him, Robert E. Lee ordered General Jubal Early to take his Army of the Valley up the Shenandoah, across the Potomac, and attack Washington, D.C., to force the Union to divert forces to protect the capital. Lew Wallace, commander of the Unions Middle Department, headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, when he learned of Earlys advance, took a small force, mostly inexperienced troops with little battle experience, to the Monocacy River, south of Frederick, Maryland, in an effort to slow the Confederate advance.
The Battle at Monocacy Junction, on July 9, 1864, was a victory for the Confederate army, but Early failed to capitalize on Wallaces withdrawal, delaying his march on Washington for a day, during which time, the Union army was able to bring in reinforcements. Earlys July 11-12 assault was repulsed and his army was driven back into Virginia and subsequently almost destroyed.
Bad feelings between Grant and Wallace stemming from the disastrous Battle of Shiloh early in the war, causes Wallaces actions that saved Washington to be ignored, but in the end, it was finally acknowledged that he achieved more in his defeat than many other commanders had achieved by battlefield victories.
