A brand new Western adventure from Charles Ray!

When Rusty turns in a captured outlaw to the sheriff of a small town in Colorado, the sheriff talks him into going after a man who killed two of the town’s citizens over a card game and fled. Rusty doesn’t need the money, but he loves a challenge, and when he learns that the fugitive headed east toward Kansas, he’s intrigued. In Kansas, he tracks the outlaw to an area near the town of Nicodemus, a small town that has been established by Black settlers from the former Confederate states who had suffered when Reconstruction ended and the Union army troops were no longer protecting them in places like Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. What they thought would be the promised land, though, has not lived up to expectations. Rusty learns that a greedy land speculator has hired professional gunfighters to try to chase them off their new homes. He’s still determined to capture the wanted man, but first, he decides to help the citizens of Nicodemus secure their land claims.
