The Texas drought of 1957 has broken, and a farmer's son with a big imagination is suddenly given the chance to live out his dreams. When a mysterious old wizard appears and offers the boy a chance to save a fantastical and magical world by slaying a dark lord, Rusty follows his heart, and is whisked away to another dimension.

But his brother Cyrus, a broken Korean War Veteran, is less than thrilled about Rusty's abduction. He pulls out all the stops to find his brother, while dealing with hostile small-town neighbors, insane and incompetent secret agents, and his own family's quirks. While he does this, Rusty finds himself stuck in a dark and grim world where he has to fight for his survival, and there's a very good chance he'll end up dead in the mud next to the corpses of his new friends: other children suckered into a war that they didn't start and can't finish.

This is where it all begins.

This is the year that humanity starts fighting back against the magical jerks who would steal our children.
