Book 1: Allies, Spies, and Conflicts

A nightjar, aka nighthawk,
is a mysterious and elusive bird. Hidden under feathers of blotchy grey and brown, in daylight the fowl proved near impossible to separate from its surroundings. At night, when the nightjar hunted, the camouflage made the bird undetectable.

One hundred and two years after his death, Philip V claimed the throne of the great Macedonian King, Alexander. The new king immediately led his phalanxes in a campaign of conquest. Had it not been for Rome, its allies, and its Legions, Philip V would have ruled the Greek city-states and possibly the entire Mediterranean region. The victory over Philip, however, didn’t start on a battlefield. It began in a back room at the headquarters of Rome’s Eastern Fleet.

Scanlan Romiliia Saltare matched the description of the nondescript. An Insubri Gaul with the adopted pedigree of a Roman noble family, he didn’t fit into anyone’s social circles. Yet, with his aptitude for survival and even features, Scanlan could blend into places that spies needed to infiltrate.

Once drafted into the world of espionage, Scanlan Saltare would be part of a network of spies working with the Legions and with allies. He would attempt to balance small conflicts before the King of Macedonia could march into the cracks and conquer a region. Because of his talent for camouflage, preference for hunting at night, and elusiveness, the head of Planning and Strategies would give Scanlan the codename, Nightjar.
