Allies, Spies, and Conflicts
A tale of a King versus a spy, during the Second Macedonian War.
In the years following the defeat of Carthage, the Republic of Rome shifted its focus. A new threat arose in the form of Phillip V of Macedonia, heir to the throne of Alexander the Great. When the King flexed his might and fielded his phalanxes, the world trembled. Already in control of the regions bordering the Aegean Sea, Phillip cast his eyes on the other Greek city states and the rest of the Mediterranean.
To refuse the Macedonian his dream of conquest, Rome joined with Rhodes, the Kingdom of Pergamum, Egypt, and Athens. To reassure allies that Rome had emerged from the war with Carthage strong enough to stop the King, the Senate sent representatives to every Province threatened by Philip.
As befit important dignitaries, Rome’s ambassadors traveled with high-ranking associates, veterans as bodyguards, and a plethora of servants. Also positioned in every entourage were mysterious men charged with finding secrets, discovering weakness in local defenses, uncovering strife in militias, and sowing the seeds of unrest when necessary.
Scanlian Romillia Saltare, born an Insubri Gaul but adopted into a noble Roman family, sought adventure on the sea as a rower. But fate would snatch him from the crew of the trireme and thrust him into the secretive world of the Speculatores. Soon, the youth would be forced to deal with allies, spies, and conflicts far beyond his years and far removed from his service as an oarsman.
