‘A slice of the darkest noir transported to the sunny climate of Seville – a great character and a great book.’ Mason Cross

July 1998, Seville.

It's another sun-drenched summer in Seville - and two priests have been found brutally murdered.

Then a third victim shows up, a Russian whom Inspector Velázquez - a homicide detective with a dark secret - suspects of having links with organized crime.

Evidence comes to light that suggests one of the murdered priests might have been behind the assassination of General Balmes, during the bloody Civil War.

Has someone in the murdered General’s family taken it on themselves to avenge the military man’s death all these years after the event?

Meanwhile, gangster Diego Blanco informs Inspector Velázquez that the Russian victim had been intent on leaving the employ of his criminal compatriots to come and work for him.

Are the three murders connected? And if so, what could possibly link two old priests with the Russian Mafia?

Inspector Velázquez’s wife endures a sudden accident. But when the Inspector rushes to the hospital where she is recovering, he discovers she has gone missing.

It is down to Velázquez to find his wife and deliver her from her captors.

Velázquez must also uncover how all the events are connected - and bring the perpetrators to justice.

Nick Sweet lives in Spain where he writes and teaches.
