Two women, born in the 1920s, related, but of totally different backgrounds, start out in life knowing nothing about the existence of the other. Gradually, the elder of the two - jealous, bold and disastrously attractive to the opposite sex - makes some surprising discoveries, which awaken in her an obsessive desire to destroy the unenlightened younger one. Set in the West Country at the end of the First World War, the story probes the eternal question: how much is an individual's make-up due to nature or nurture?
