'I'm afraid the day the Ferov family came into our lives was bad news for the Askhams, the Bolingbrokes and the Lightermans... '
This is the second volume of The Askham Chronicles beginning with Never Such Innocence (1898-1915) which introduced three families of different classes, different expectations. In this volume we meet the children and grandchildren, hopeful of their future, tormented by their past.
For Susan, the future means Russia and a tumultuous affair with the communist Kyril Ferov. For the bright hope Bobby, it means wealth, power, status - and the shadow of infidelity. For Ralph, young Lord Askham, there is the painful break with the family tradition of military service - and the anguish that that entails. All the children of Rachel and Bosco, of Melanie and Adam, are changed when the old world of affluence, splendour and patronage disappears overtaken by the profound effects of the Russian Revolution and rise of Hitler in Germany. A much grimmer age dawns - exacerbated and enlightened by a family of impoverished princely exiles from communist Russia, the Ferovs, who cause a trail of devastation within the hallowed family circle - devastation both hilarious and sinister.
