One Good Deed Before I Die

Norland Cardenas was getting along in years, sixty-one years old. He took care of his small farm and he and his wife had raised a family. Other than his family, he helped no one. When asked for help, he would say, “You got yourself into that mess, get out of it.” Folks didn’t hate him, they just knew he was the one person not to depend upon when trouble came. And trouble did come to that valley. A wealthy greedy man came to town offering to buy one and all farms in this whole valley. When folks wouldn’t sell, crops were burned, cattle and horses killed. Then barns were the next to burn. Folks had to band together or lose everything they had worked so hard for.
