U.S. Marshal Shorty Thompson and El Paso Sheriff Hud Hart, along with two deputies, had a half hour gun battle with the Wink Brimhall and the Ruis Salas gangs that had joined forces to rob both El Paso banks at the same time.
When the gangs—what was left of them—grabbed horses and rode north, they had left seven men lying dead. Four of those were gang members, one was a deputy, and two more were bank employes.
Hud and Shorty walked among the dead. “Shorty, we didn’t get Brimhall or Salas. Heading north I’d think either Tularosa or Lincoln or maybe even White Oaks.”
“Yeah, hope that desert gets a few of um before I do. I’ll ride come morning with three canteens of water. I know every water hole and spring. Hope they don’t.”
“They’ll have better than a half day on you.”
“That’s what I want. Let um think they’re in the clear.”
