A brand new Western adventure from Paul L. Thompson!

The end of the Civil War left most of the once rich South now poorly devastated. Farms and plantations were burned and looted. The ones that survived knew they had to forget about growing cotton for a good while and grow food for themselves and neighbors.

Oscar Palmer called all of his ex-slaves together for a meeting. “You folks are now free to go and do as you please. Both of your families, I made sure at the auction when you were sold to me, I bought every family member you had so you would always be together. If you stay, you will always have a home and I will pay each of you twenty-five cents a day and will always see you have food as long as my family does. The elderly will always be taken care of.

“The ones that think they can find a better life, I wish them well and thank all of you for your hard work.”

He turned to walk off but an elderly man said, “We all will stay, Mister Palmer. You have always treated us well and took care of the sick. Never once did you turn to the whip. In fact, I don’t think you even own one.” He smiled and said, “If allowed, the Lewis and Swayne families will always think you a friend.”

Mister Palmer turned back with a smile. “Thank you, Albert, and I accept your friendship.”
