Archaeologist Reuben Hayles was under police protection after receiving a warning that his life was in imminent danger. Superintendent Budd guarded the door of his room against any intruder, with Sergeant Leek stationed outside the room's only window. Despite this, Hayles was discovered battered to death. The room was empty - devoid of any murder weapon, so the blow was not self-inflicted. And a search revealed no hidden panels. How had the man been killed?
