A novel by

Alexander McNair, younger son of the Laird of Strathcairne, has little regard for his prospective inheritance of Tora, a remote Scottish island owned by his uncle, and he is not pleased when his luxurious lifestyle is interrupted by an enforced visit. However, his attitude rapidly alters when he meets two women who dramatically affect his life. Contrary to his uncle's wishes he becomes obsessed with an alluring young widow, Mhairi-Anne Graham. Nevertheless, he recklessly seduces the vulnerable Victoria Liversidge - a mistake he wishes only to forget. On returning home, and burdened with unexpected responsibilities, Alexander is still unable to forget Mhairi-Anne. He is dismayed to discover that Victoria has a claim on him, and that, consequently, his family will be scandalized.
