In this sequel to The Witching Woman, Alexander McNair has been a changed man since he visited the island of Tora, which he is to inherit from his Uncle James. Not only is he now heir to the Strathcairn estate, but also the discovery of his son has precipitated his marriage to Victoria Liversidge, whom he met and seduced on Tora. As the couple vanish abroad on honeymoon, Alexander hopes he will be able to forget Mhairi-Anne Graham, who claimed his heart during his island visit. But Victoria is not the innocent she pretends to be. When the couple learn that James McNair has become engaged to Mhairi-Anne, Alexander is consumed with jealousy, while Victoria is terrified her husband may discover that he has married the wrong woman.
