The Dumont Island Boarding House is located in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and is only accessible by car ferry. Most roads on the island are gravel, though the main road that travels down the middle of the island is paved. There are conveniences such as a general store, post office, souvenir shops, café, and a post office on the island, as well as a few cottages spaced along the amazing coastline. The boarding house sits on the far side of the island, with limited resources including electricity supplied only by generator for a brief time during the early evening hours, with gasoline lanterns used at night. Everyone knows each other on the island and they all like to take care of each other as a community of neighbors.

Emily Carlton has lived a troubled life of foster care temporary placements, group homes, and reunifications with her parents. It has caused her to be introverted and to shield herself from personal relationships as everyone seems to disappoint her. Her biggest dream in life is to meet the sister she never knew, Rachel. When her mother asked to make the trip, she jumped at the opportunity.
