After her doctor father's death in the Great War, Abigail Banks, a photographer, returns to her childhood home of Eastmere. There, Abby is reunited with her childhood friend Sophie and welcomed back by the poor Johnson family, who have never forgotten her father's kindness. But she also meets with hostility in the form of the hot-headed Patrick Johnson. Setting up a studio in the town, Abby finds herself encountering corruption and greed among those with influence. But she finds allies in the editor of the local paper and young Doctor William Maybury. Many battles lie ahead for Abby and she and Patrick are often destined to cross swords. Eventually he can't help admitting that they share a common ideal. But is that enough?
