Although from opposite ends of the social spectrum, Sally and Fiona become fast friends working together in an aircraft factory during the Second World War. After the war ends neither can settle down, and then Fiona has the idea of the pair opening a catering business together. Whilst their new venture gets off to a good start in spite of rationing and transport problems, their personal lives are not so successful. Fiona, whose fiance died during the war, is sure she can never love again. Meanwhile, cockney Sally falls for Fiona's RAF pilot brother who she feels is socially superior. But secrets lie uncovered in both Fiona and Sally's pasts that will shape their own future and the lives of those they love.
