Late summer 1226. This is Walter’s sixty-second year and he is feeling his age. But any thoughts he might have for a quiet life are dashed when he receives a summons from an old enemy, the Bishop of Winchester, to a meeting at his London palace. Walter takes with him his latest assistant who immediately goes missing in mysterious circumstances.

The bishop tells Walter that he has a daughter who has run off with the stable boy and he wants Walter to use his skills to track them down. But is this the real story? An apparently chance meeting with a twelve-year-old boy and a group of pilgrims takes Walter on a journey to Canterbury in search of the runaways. Along the way one of the pilgrims is murdered. But are any of the pilgrims what they appear to be?

Walter realises there are darker things going on than a simple elopement that involves a power struggle between two of England’s most senior politicians, the young King Henry and the King of France.
