May 1217. In the aftermath of Magna Carta the nobles of England have rebelled and civil war rages across the land. King John is dead and Prince Louis of France has invaded with the intention of becoming the next king.
In the midst of this Brother Walter has been charged with escorting a mysterious lady and her manservant across war-torn England to Lincoln. When they get there they find they are caught up in the greatest land battle on English soil since the Battle of Hastings in the course of which a knight is murdered.
