Listeners unfamiliar with Lieutenant Halfhyde's adventures, as I was, are in for a treat. This story of Halfhyde and his bumbling captain is a piece of historical humor. On a sensitive rescue mission in Chungking in the 1890s, Halfhyde must rescue Europeans stranded in the British Consulate, surrounded by rebels, while preventing the execution of the captured Captain Watkiss. Christopher Scott's interpretation paints a humorous picture in broad strokes with caricatured voices-especially for the obnoxious British captain-and a backdrop of a complex historical adventure. While some language is offensive, overall HALFHYDE is both exciting and funny. J.A.S. (c) AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine
