Just outside of Big Sandy, Texas, while aboard the Tyler Tap, Lucius Clay, a businessman from Gladewater, is taken off the train at gunpoint. Hours later, his mother, Claudia McKinsey of Longview, receives a telegram demanding a ten-thousand-dollar ransom for the return of her son. She is frantic and immediately wires her sister in Waco, Lucy Brewster, Judge Leon Brewster’s wife, requesting her assistance in raising the large sum of money.
Judge Brewster smells a rat. He reluctantly withdraws five thousand dollars from the bank and sends it in care of Marshal Jubal Stone. Has Clay truly been abducted or is this his way of swindling his family out of money? Stone will soon find out.
