When U.S. Marshal Shorty Thompson stepped down from the train in Des Moines, Iowa he was dead tired and only wanted a ride to a hotel with a nice bed.
He whistled for a buggy and walked over as one stopped. “Need ah good Hotel.”
“Ah Marshal, lookout behind you!”
As Shorty grabbed for his pistol, he squatted and turned just as a bullet peeled skin off his left cheek. His forty-five was in his hand spitting two inches of flame as that slug caught that shooter right between the eyes.
Shorty looked at that scared driver. “What the hell was that all about?”
“Word is about you would be here to pick up Mad Dog Richard Cummings and return him to Colorado.”
“An’ by damn I’ll do just that come hell er high water. Now let’s get to that hotel.”
