'It was an unsuitable setting for death, Detective Chief Inspector Finch thought. Lovers should have occupied it, not a corpse. The sunken garden was humming with heat and fragrance, the one striking back from the paving-stones, the other rising with as much power from the roses and clipped borders of lavender which surrounded them'. But a corpse there is - the body of Rex Holt, wealthy retired businessman, lying at the bottom of the stone steps down from the terrace, his dark-red dressing-gown matching the pool of dried blood round his head. He looks like a man ready for bed, so it is certainly odd that he should be lying in the garden. But does it, wonders Finch, amount to murder?
