A brand new Shorty Thompson adventure from Paul L. Thompson!
It took right at a week for Frank and Karl Lang to roundup and separate one hundred and seventy head of cattle they were taking to a waiting buyer in Amarillo, Texas. It would be four or five days of slow driving to take that herd that twenty-five miles south.
The hardest part was just two men and a ten-year-old boy taking them. Ten-year-old Cody and his dog, Pup, would lead out, with cattle following them.
The second night camp was made and cattle circled and bedded down. Frank, Cody’s grandpa, bragged on how well he did today. “You’re keeping the right speed, boy. Couldn’t ask for better.”
The next morning just as coffee and breakfast were over, seven riders came firing guns and stampeded the cattle. Frank and Karl grabbed guns and were quickly shot down.
That shooter sat on that horse, looking down at scared Cody. “Yer too young to kill. Get, boy, get!”
“No! You get! I’m checking on Dad and Grandpa!”
Clete Murdock laughed, turned his horse, and went after his men and those running cattle.
