With the World supposedly at peace, albeit a fragile one, Giles Courtenay is summoned to the Admiralty and instructed to get his ship, HERCULES back into commission and sail immediately for the West Indies. His mission; to assist the Islanders of Santo Domingo in their uprising against their French masters. In this he succeeds and is then caught up in the campaign to re-take the Islands of Tobago and St Lucie from the French, war having been declared on the Revolutionary Government headed by Bonaparte. Courtenay and his ship are placed in the position of greatest danger by his enemy Lord Cairns. By a cunning ruse, he avoids the need for a full scale suicidal attack on a strong French Fort, and the campaign is successful. He and his ship are then assigned to trying to prevent privateer attacks on Merchant ships, and in particular by one such ship, painted black, and under the control of a French Admiral who escaped from Santo Domingo. His name is Reynartd and he thinks he is as wiry as his namesake....until he meets Giles Courtenay.
